David W. Phillips, El Paso Criminal Attorney

David W. Phillips is a criminal defense attorney in the El Paso office of Dunham & Jones who has practiced law for more than 35 years, with criminal defense as his primary focus for more than two decades. He has tried more than 200 jury trials in cases ranging from DWI to capital murder and has handled thousands of felony and misdemeanor cases. He has also tried multiple high-profile cases in jurisdictions throughout Texas, yet he believes each client's case is the most important one.

Mr. Phillips earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from Texas Christian University in 1980 and his Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law in 1988, and he was licensed in Texas in 1989. He worked in the Commercial Law Department of Texaco in Coral Gables, Florida, from 1989 to 2005, then served as a named partner in several law partnerships in Corpus Christi from 2005 to 2010. From 2010 to 2019, he ran his own practice, David W. Phillips, Attorney at Law, with offices in Corpus Christi and San Antonio.

Today Mr. Phillips handles DWI, assault and family violence, drug, sex crime, theft, and weapons cases, both misdemeanors and felonies, and he appears most often in El Paso County. He is most comfortable selecting a jury and trying a case when the need arises. When a jury trial carries too much risk, he works to minimize a client's exposure through effective plea bargaining. Throughout, he keeps communication with clients open and direct so they stay well informed during the criminal defense process.

Mr. Phillips has always enjoyed criminal law, but he does this work mostly to help others. Originally from Hot Springs, Arkansas, he moved during high school and has lived in many places since. Outside of work, he is a self-described gym rat who enjoys scuba diving, hiking, and motorcycle riding.
