Jonathan ‘Jon’ Churchill, Denton Criminal Attorney

Jonathan 'Jon' Churchill is a criminal defense attorney in the Denton office of Dunham & Jones. More than half of his cases are felonies, mainly domestic violence, drug, assault, theft, and DWI cases, and he also handles the misdemeanors the firm takes on in Wise County. He appears most often in Denton, Wise, and Jack Counties.

Born and raised in Abilene, Texas, Mr. Churchill graduated with honors from Abilene Christian University in December 2013 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. During his undergraduate studies, he worked at an emergency youth shelter and helped care for at-risk children and teens in Abilene.

The University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law awarded him his law degree and a certificate in Criminal Law and Policy in 2021, and along the way he took every opportunity to gain practical experience advocating for clients. He represented children in dependency proceedings, both as an intern for the Office of Children's Counsel and in the Child and Family Law Clinic, where he gained his first trial experience. He also took part in a year-long clinic with the University of Arizona Innocence Project, worked as a trial extern for the Maricopa County Public Defender's Office on felony cases, and assisted Tucson criminal defense attorney Harold Higgins with appeals from 2020 to 2021.

Mr. Churchill was licensed in Texas in 2021. From 2021 to 2022 he clerked for Judge Casey McGinley of the Pima County Superior Court, first in juvenile court and then on the civil bench, helping draft rulings, performing legal research, and serving as bailiff in hearings and trials. He then moved back to his home state and joined Dunham & Jones, working in the firm's Midland office before transferring to Denton in December 2024. He has tried jury trials as both first chair and second chair.

Mr. Churchill starts every case by absorbing all of the evidence and reviewing it with the client, then placing the arrest within the broader context of the client's life. He wants to know where each client has come from, what their goals are, and who they are as people. He values the chance to help people facing the weight of the State of Texas, and he works toward resolutions that let clients keep their liberty, their jobs, their children, and their ability to support their families.

In his free time, Mr. Churchill enjoys long-distance running, hiking, drumming, and whatever activities his daughter has put on his calendar.
