Sara Ruth Spector, Midland Criminal Attorney

Sara Ruth Spector is a criminal defense attorney in the Midland office of Dunham & Jones. Her caseload is mostly assault, sexual assault, and child abuse charges, and she appears in Midland, Howard, Martin, and Ector Counties and in the federal Western District of Texas. She has tried more than 100 jury trials and handled hundreds of cases.

Ms. Spector earned a degree in political science with special honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1986 and her Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law in 1989, where the faculty chose her to teach legal research and writing to first-year students. She was licensed in Texas in 1989 and admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas in 1990.

She served as a prosecutor in Bastrop County from 2002 to 2005, McLennan County from 2005 to 2006, and Ellis County from 2006 to 2009, then in the 38th Judicial District from 2010 to 2013. As a child abuse prosecutor she was asked to teach Grand Rounds at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 2008, showing professors and students how to recognize the signs of Munchausen by proxy in parents. Texas Monthly featured her in an article about a case she prosecuted.

Ms. Spector works a case from a personal perspective. She wants personal contact, not electronic, with the client and with the prosecutor, so communication runs both ways. She does this work to rectify the injustices of the world, and her years as a prosecutor give her knowledge of both sides of the criminal justice system.

Ms. Spector has lived in the Midland area for more than a decade and serves as treasurer of the Midland Criminal Defense Bar. She is a charter member of Midland Teen Court and has served on the boards of Bastrop CASA, the Bastrop Literacy Council, and the Midland March of Dimes. Outside of work she volunteers on political campaigns, walks her dogs Gunner and Bubba, and follows the news closely.
