G. Alan Steele, Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist

George Alan 'Alan' Steele is a criminal defense attorney in the Fort Worth office of Dunham & Jones and is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. His practice is criminal defense, the large majority of it felony work, with a concentration in sexual assault cases, and it also covers appeals and post-conviction litigation.

Mr. Steele handles felony cases in Tarrant and Johnson Counties, appearing most often in the 372nd District Court in Tarrant County and the 18th, 249th, and 413th District Courts in Johnson County. He has also tried cases in Hood, Parker, Hill, Erath, Collin, and Dallas Counties. He has tried more than 40 jury trials as first chair and more than 40 as second chair, out of thousands of cases.

Mr. Steele came to law from law enforcement. He joined the Fort Worth Police Department as a civilian employee in 1997 and stayed until 2005, earning Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Telecommunications certification from the state licensing agency now called the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, along with formal training in fingerprint comparison and classification. That training still shapes how he cross-examines forensic witnesses. He earned his B.A. in English from Texas Wesleyan University in 2001 while working at the department, then his Juris Doctor from Texas Wesleyan School of Law, now Texas A&M University School of Law, in 2006, with graduate coursework in Criminal Justice at Tarleton State University. He ran the Law Office of G. Alan Steele from 2006 to 2013, served as an Assistant Public Defender in Dallas County from 2013 to 2015, ran The Steele Firm from 2016 to 2022, and spent those same years volunteering with Legal Access Texas on criminal defense cases.

Mr. Steele starts thinking about trial at the first meeting, because many of the cases he takes are cases that get decided in a courtroom. He wants the client's whole story, good or bad, and not only the part about the allegations.

He was raised in a law enforcement family and spent years inside a police department himself, so criminal law has always felt like part of who he is. His father, one of his biggest supporters, believed that someone has to keep the police and the system honest and that the government can run over the innocent. No conviction is worth trusting unless the defense has tested it, and the rules have to apply to the government the same way they apply to the accused.

Mr. Steele is a published poet. He also officiated high school football and soccer, and has since retired from both.
