Ivan Barrera, San Antonio Criminal Attorney

Ivan Barrera is a criminal defense attorney at Dunham & Jones, representing clients across San Antonio and the surrounding areas with a deep sense of purpose. He handles state criminal cases of every kind in Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, Karnes, Wilson, Atascosa, Medina, and Gonzales Counties. He has tried more than 25 cases and handled more than 1,000.

Born and raised in San Juan, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, Mr. Barrera is a first-generation American and the proud son of migrant field workers. He was the first in his family to attend college, a milestone that laid the foundation for his career in the law.

Mr. Barrera earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Texas-Pan American in 2013 and his Juris Doctor from St. Mary's University School of Law in 2019. While in law school, he participated in the Criminal Law Clinic, where he represented clients under supervision. His casework included a writ of habeas corpus in a capital murder matter, representation of a juvenile in a family violence case, and appointment as ad litem in federal court for a juvenile facing potential child pornography charges.

Before joining Dunham & Jones, Mr. Barrera clerked at a Texas firm that focused on criminal defense and personal injury, sharpening his litigation skills and his understanding of client advocacy, and after he was licensed in Texas in 2019 he practiced in San Antonio at the Law Office of Shawn C. Brown, Raul B. Rodriguez Law, and Crawshaw & Simpson. Today he devotes his practice to criminal defense, guided by a firm belief in due process and the constitutional rights of the accused, and his practice also includes federal immigration court.

Every case starts with getting to know the client as a person, followed by a full and thorough investigation of the facts. Mr. Barrera brings a client-first mindset and a strong work ethic to that work, along with the perspective of someone who rose from humble beginnings. He is a member of the San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.

Outside of work, Mr. Barrera enjoys traveling the world, woodworking, do-it-yourself projects, watching sports, and reading nonfiction and comic books, and he spends time with his wife, their son, and their three dogs.
