Robert Buford, Board Certified Criminal Law Specialist

Robert L. Buford III is Of Counsel to Dunham & Jones and has practiced criminal defense in Austin since 1996. He is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, a certification he has held since 2003. He has tried more than 40 cases to verdict, every one of them as first chair, and has handled more than 1,000 cases.

Mr. Buford is based in Travis County and takes cases there and in the contiguous counties. His work covers driving while intoxicated (DWI), family violence, drug charges, and serious felonies, including cases built on blood draws, search warrants, and No Refusal weekends.

He earned a Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M University in 1992 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Denver in 1995. A Master of Public Health from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston followed in 1999, and his legal work concentrated on health law. That training gives him a footing in cases that turn on physiology, injury, and forensic science, where the evidence is medical before it is legal.

His career began at Dunham & Jones from 1996 to 1998. He spent the next twenty years at Buford & Gonzalez, opened the Law Office of Robert L. Buford III in 2018, and returned to Dunham & Jones as Of Counsel in 2021.

Mr. Buford co-chaired the committee that drafted the standing order for blood test discovery in Travis County, which set the terms on which the State turns over blood evidence in a DWI case.

He is admitted to the State Bar of Texas and to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas.
