Matt Shanks, Houston Criminal Attorney

Charles Matthew ‘Matt’ Shanks is a criminal defense attorney in the Houston office of Dunham & Jones. Licensed in Texas since 2002, he has represented thousands of clients in cases ranging from misdemeanors to serious felonies, and he has tried more than 35 jury trials as first chair.

Mr. Shanks began his career as an Assistant County Attorney in Williamson County from 2002 to 2004, where he prosecuted DWI, assault, family violence, and drug cases and tried more than 25 cases to verdict. In 2004 he opened the Law Office of C. Matthew Shanks and spent the next 20 years defending people charged with felonies and misdemeanors before joining Dunham & Jones.

Mr. Shanks served as President of the Williamson County Bar Association from 2010 to 2011 and as Board Chairman of the Lawyer Referral Service of Central Texas from 2017 to 2022. He is a certified mediator, earned his guardianship certification in 2022, and completed the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Testing course in 2014.

He graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in history and a minor in business, and he earned his Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law in 2002.

Outside of the office, he enjoys golf, travel, and time with family and friends.
