Lance Kitchens is a criminal defense attorney in the Denton office of Dunham & Jones and a former Tarrant County prosecutor. He has tried seventeen cases to a jury verdict and handled hundreds more, and he now brings that courtroom record to the defense of people charged with serious felonies and misdemeanors across North Texas.
Mr. Kitchens graduated from William Jewell College in May 2014, where he played football and spent a semester studying in Europe. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Wyoming College of Law in May 2017. During law school he competed in voir dire competition and was active in the Wyoming Trial Lawyers Association and Wyoming Law Students for Equal Justice — early signs of a practice that would center on the jury box.
Licensed in Oklahoma in September 2017, Mr. Kitchens practiced there until November 2021. He was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in October 2021 and joined the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office that December. Over the next three years he worked his way through the office's full range of assignments: he began in misdemeanors across several of the County Criminal Courts, spent several months in the Juvenile division, and served on the felony court teams for two criminal district courts. That progression gave him a prosecutor's view of how cases are screened, valued, and tried — from a first appearance in a county court through a felony docket in a district court.
Mr. Kitchens left the District Attorney's Office in November 2024 to practice criminal defense. He appears regularly in Denton, Wise, Jack, and Cooke Counties, handling both serious felony charges and misdemeanors, and he is also admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas.
His approach is straightforward and, by his own account, unglamorous: attention to detail and thorough preparation.
