Alexander Steven Hinshaw is a criminal defense attorney in the Amarillo office of Dunham & Jones. His practice centers on felony defense, including domestic violence, sexual assault, aggravated assault, and the occasional financial crime. He appears most often in the Potter County Courts at Law and district courts, the 222nd District Court in Deaf Smith and Oldham Counties, and the 69th District Court in Dallam, Hartley, Sherman, and Moore Counties.
Mr. Hinshaw was born and raised in small-town southwestern Oklahoma. He attended the University of Oklahoma on a Valedictorian Scholarship and was a member of the President's Leadership Class. In 2019 he graduated magna cum laude from an accelerated program with a bachelor's degree in economics and a master's degree in managerial economics, both earned in four years. After leaving Norman, he headed south to Dallas and earned his Juris Doctor from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in 2022 on a Dean's Scholarship, working as a judicial intern for Oklahoma's Fifth District Court during law school.
Licensed in Texas in 2022, Mr. Hinshaw went to the Potter County Attorney's Office as an Assistant County Attorney, handling a wide array of misdemeanor cases through both trial and negotiation before joining Dunham & Jones. He has tried more than 10 jury trials, most as first chair, and handled more than 500 cases.
Mr. Hinshaw's first question is how to beat the charge. Some cases cannot be won on the merits, which he says does not have to mean a bad outcome. He counsels the client through the process, up to trial, or looks for an off ramp that protects the client's liberty. He believes the government has a heavy burden to carry when it accuses a person of a crime, and that his job is to hold it there.
Mr. Hinshaw has lived in Amarillo since finishing law school. Outside of the office, he follows Oklahoma Sooners football and basketball and spends time with family, friends, and his dog, Charlotte.
