Perry Bryan Sims is a criminal trial attorney at Dunham & Jones in Lubbock with more than 35 years of courtroom experience as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney. He has tried more than 300 jury trials as first chair over the course of his career, ranging from misdemeanors to complex felonies, including murder and capital murder, and has handled more than 5,000 cases in more than 30 counties in Texas and California.A native of Abilene, Texas, Mr. Sims earned a degree in government from Abilene Christian University in 1982 before attending the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1990. While in law school, he clerked for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California, where he began his trial career in federal court as a certified student attorney. That early experience sparked a lifelong passion for trial work, and he completed multiple jury trials before earning his law degree. He was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1990, a license that is now inactive.
After graduation, Mr. Sims served as a Deputy District Attorney for Sacramento County for 15 years, litigating a wide range of criminal cases in California state courts, from white-collar crime and gang prosecutions to sexual assault, narcotics, burglary, and DWI. In 2004, he returned to Texas, was licensed here, and continued his prosecutorial career as First Assistant District Attorney in Brown County from 2004 to 2007. He later served as an Assistant District Attorney with the Border Prosecution Unit, a collaborative statewide effort focused on serious crimes in Texas border communities, in the 452nd Judicial District, which covers McCulloch, Edwards, Kimble, Menard, and Mason Counties.
In addition to his prosecutorial work, Mr. Sims ran a solo practice from 2005 to 2013, representing clients in both criminal defense and civil matters, and he has tried capital murder cases as both a prosecutor and a defense attorney. From 2016 to 2021 he taught as a Professor of Criminal Justice at Lubbock Christian University. His experience on both sides of the courtroom gives him a practical perspective in building defenses for clients facing serious charges.
Mr. Sims believes every person deserves to have their constitutional rights defended and upheld, including the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures. He considers defending individuals against the power and force of the State an honor and a calling.
He is a father of five and a grandfather, and he is teaching his grandchildren to golf.
