Derrick C. Flemming, Houston Criminal Attorney

Derrick Christopher Flemming is a criminal defense attorney in the Houston office of Dunham & Jones. He practices in the Harris County felony courts, defending people charged with assault, family violence, drug, sex, and weapons offenses. He has handled hundreds of cases and has tried felony cases to a jury as first chair.

Mr. Flemming was raised in the south suburbs of Chicago. He earned a Bachelor of Science in criminology and criminal justice from Indiana State University in 2016 and moved to Houston shortly after. He graduated from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in 2021, and Texas licensed him that year. During law school he interned with the Florida Department of Health’s Prosecution Services Unit and clerked for a former Houston city councilmember.

Mr. Flemming began his career as an associate attorney in the Tax Controversy Services department at Alliantgroup, defending businesses in state and federal tax audits from 2021 to 2022. He first joined Dunham & Jones in 2022, left in 2023 to serve as Election Crisis Coordinator for the nonprofit State Voices Florida, and returned to the firm in 2024. In 2026 he graduated from the TCDLA Tim Evans Trial College and joined the Texas Bar College’s Society of Legal Scholars. He also volunteers as a pro bono attorney with the Texas Fair Defense Project.

His approach, in his words: “I approach each case and client with compassion for the circumstances that brought them before me and passion to defend their rights and freedom.”

Outside of work, he spends time with his wife, golfs, reads, works as a community organizer, and seeks out new restaurants and coffee shops.
