Matthew Lee ‘Matt’ Byrne, Midland Criminal Attorney

Matthew Lee 'Matt' Byrne is the Managing Attorney in the Midland office of Dunham & Jones. He handles misdemeanor and felony cases at the trial level in courts throughout the Permian Basin. He has tried more than 10 jury trials as first chair and about five as second chair, and he has handled thousands of cases.

Mr. Byrne earned a Bachelor of Science from Tulane University in 2001, double majoring in molecular biology and philosophy, and his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. In law school he took part in moot court and the Capital Punishment Clinic, and Texas licensed him in 2005. The science training shows in how he reads forensic and evidentiary questions.

His career has run through capital and post-conviction defense, private practice, and state service. He has been a staff attorney with the Texas Defender Service, a fellowship attorney and research and writing specialist with Federal Defender Services of Idaho, an associate at the Law Office of Joseph A. Turner, and the principal of his own firm.

On the State's side, Mr. Byrne presided over administrative hearings and issued decisions in regulatory disputes as an appeals tribunal hearing officer at the Texas Workforce Commission. He served as associate counsel at the HHSC Office of Inspector General and as an Assistant Attorney General defending agency actions in civil court.

He does this work because he finds it fulfilling and meaningful, and because it helps a lot of people.

Mr. Byrne is from Austin and Houston. Outside of work he shoots, plays guitar, and camps.
