Jacob David 'JD' Schmidt is a criminal defense attorney in the Corpus Christi office of Dunham & Jones. He represents clients charged with felonies and misdemeanors, including DWI, sexual assault, drug offenses, and family violence, in Nueces, San Patricio, Aransas, Kleberg, Kenedy, Jim Wells, and Live Oak Counties.Mr. Schmidt graduated from Western New Mexico University with a Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice in 1997. During that time and for years after, from 1995 to 2007, he was a police officer. He served five years with the Silver City Police Department and about eight years with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, where he worked as a detective and as a narcotics agent with the Region II Narcotics Task Force. He also taught police classes as a police instructor and firearms instructor. From 2001 through 2010 he served in the U.S. Navy Reserve, leaving as a Master-at-Arms First Class (E-6).
In 2007 he started law school at Texas Tech University School of Law, graduating in 2010. While in law school, he clerked for a Lubbock defense attorney and was part of the Innocence Project. After he was licensed in Texas in 2010, he ran his own practice in Amarillo, concentrating mostly on family law, from 2011 until he joined Dunham & Jones. He has tried more than 15 jury trials as first chair and handled more than 1,000 cases.
Mr. Schmidt starts with the client's account in the client's own words, then tests it against the police report and any video. He defines success case by case. Sometimes that is a dismissal, sometimes community supervision, which most people call probation, and sometimes it is keeping a client out of prison.
Mr. Schmidt fell in love with Corpus Christi on vacation and moved there as soon as his children graduated and moved out. Outside of work, he rides his Harley and heads to the beach.
