J. Michael McBride, Fort Worth Criminal Attorney

John Michael ‘Mike’ McBride is a criminal defense attorney with Dunham & Jones who covers about 17 courts across six East Texas counties: Smith, Henderson, Anderson, Van Zandt, Cherokee, and Houston. He takes all types of Texas criminal cases, more felony than misdemeanor, and has tried cases to a jury. Before joining the firm he was a felony prosecutor in the Tarrant County District Attorney’s White Collar and Public Integrity section.

Born and raised in Fort Worth, Mr. McBride earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and political science from Emory University in 1980 and his Juris Doctor from SMU Dedman School of Law in 1983. A clerkship with U.S. District Judge David O. Belew Jr. came next, followed by years of bankruptcy and business litigation at Fort Worth and Dallas firms and, in 1997, his own firm. He has argued before the Fifth Circuit and the Fort Worth Court of Appeals, writes on bankruptcy practice, and is a certified mediator.

He runs a case on two tracks at once, building the mitigation packet while preparing for trial, so that once the client has heard what the State is offering they can weigh trial against plea with his input. In his words: “First and most importantly, I listen to the client: their story, their background. It all matters.”

Mr. McBride sits on the Tarrant County Bar Association board and works its free legal clinic for veterans. He volunteers with Union Gospel Mission, helped start the Prayer Bear Ministry at Cook Children’s Medical Center, sings bass in the All Saints Anglican choir, and is a single parent to an adult child with special needs.
