Sara Thornburg, Dallas Criminal Attorney

Sara Thornburg is a criminal defense attorney in the Dallas office of Dunham & Jones. She handles DWI, assault and family violence, drug charges, theft, and weapons cases, both misdemeanors and felonies, and she appears most often in Dallas and Ellis Counties.

Ms. Thornburg is from Denver. She earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Colorado Mesa University, then her Juris Doctor from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, where she worked in the Hawaii Innocence Project clinic. Her legal career started in other fields. She clerked at the Law Firm of Brian DeBauche in Denver, handling family law, and she worked as an associate attorney at Kelso Law PLLC in Dallas, handling personal injury. That mix taught her early that a case rarely sits in isolation. It touches a client's family, finances, employment, and reputation at once, and she carries that whole-picture awareness into every criminal matter she handles today.

She has handled more than 500 cases and has tried jury trials in both chairs, at least three of them as first chair. In a DWI case arising out of a late-night traffic stop in Colleyville, Ms. Thornburg was part of the defense team that won a Not Guilty verdict from a Tarrant County jury. The case turned on a methodical examination of the State's field sobriety testing, and on the gap between what the officer recorded at the scene and what the State argued later, including a blood result drawn nearly two hours after the stop.

Ms. Thornburg does this work to break the system from the inside, and because she genuinely cares about people. Away from her practice she is an avid rock climber and a Pilates enthusiast, and she reads poetry and listens to true-crime podcasts.
