Ricky R. 'Rick' Chittum is a criminal defense attorney in the Midland office of Dunham & Jones and a former Midland County prosecutor. He handles felonies and misdemeanors in Midland, Ector, Ward, Reeves, and Winkler Counties, and he has tried more than 10 felony and 30 misdemeanor cases to a jury.
Before law school, Mr. Chittum served with the United States Probation Office in Midland and Abilene from 1989 to 2017, finishing as a Senior U.S. Probation Officer working on federal sentencing guidelines. In that role he trained probation officers and federal judges.
He then enrolled at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he competed on the moot court and mock trial teams, and Texas licensed him in 2022. His bachelor's degree in criminal justice and management comes from Hardin-Simmons University in 1982.
Mr. Chittum practiced with the Spurgin Law Group from 2020 to 2022, then served with the Midland County District Attorney's Office from 2022 to 2025, where he handled felony and misdemeanor trials, and he has handled more than 200 cases in all.
Mr. Chittum approaches each case with a working knowledge of evidence, procedure, and persuasion built over decades in the system. He enjoys the courtroom itself and a good argument.
Mr. Chittum is from Abilene and is a member of the Midland County Bar Association and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. Away from the office, he builds and races automobiles.
