Harper Samantha Haught, Dallas Criminal Attorney

Harper Samantha Haught is a criminal defense attorney in the Dallas office of Dunham & Jones. Drug possession cases make up most of her docket and she takes the full range of criminal charges. She appears in Kaufman County on misdemeanors and felonies and in Ellis County on felonies, and most of her work is in the smaller outlying counties.

Ms. Haught is from Abilene. She earned a B.S. in Global Studies from Abilene Christian University in 2020, where she belonged to the Ko Jo Kai women's club, and she earned her Juris Doctor from the Charleston School of Law in 2023. Her article on the Texas speedy trial statute, written as a blueprint for criminal justice reform, was published in the South Texas Law Review in 2023.

Licensed in Texas in 2024, Ms. Haught began her career at the Concho Valley Public Defender's Office, where she handled misdemeanor and felony cases from 2024 to 2025. She has handled more than 500 felony and misdemeanor cases, up to and including trial. She has been a member of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association since 2024.

Ms. Haught takes a holistic approach to a case. She reviews the evidence closely and applies the law to protect her client's rights and hold the State to the technical requirements. When a case resolves by plea, she negotiates around what the client actually wants and needs.

She does criminal defense because the Constitution is woven into the fabric of the legal system, and the rights of the people should be upheld and fought for regardless of guilt or innocence. As she puts it, better that a thousand guilty men go free than that one innocent man go to prison.

Ms. Haught lives in Dallas, where her family is and where she goes to church, and she takes part in the defense bars of the counties where she practices.
